Welcome to Mrs. Wade's Sixth Grade Math
Teacher: Mrs. Cathy Wade: cwade@stclarepdx.org
This is my second year teaching math at St. Clare School and I am delighted to begin a new year with new responsibilities! This year I will be sharing the homeroom responsibilities with Mr. Irlbeck and teaching 6th grade science in addition to teaching middle school math.
In my 16 years in education, I have taught at St. Thomas More and Christ the King in the Portland Archdiocese and at St. John's in the Seattle Archdiocese.
I believe that education is the process of uncovering, discovering - seeing with new eyes the wonders about us. The greatest joy for me in teaching is to be part of the "Aha!" moments in the classroom. My role is to organize, plan and prepare so that I can support and challenge students to make connections, to become competent, confident mathematicians and curious, thoughtful scientists.
I look forward to working with you!
Cathy Wade

Curriculum
The Archdiocese and the State of Oregon are among the first in the nation to adopt the new national math standards. These standards teach fewer topics each year, but cover each topic to more depth. The students will see the topics again when they use them but not as teaching points.
6th grade will cover the following topics:
First Trimester - Multiplication and Division for Fractions and Decimals
Second Trimester - Ratio, Rate, Percent and Probability
Third Trimester - Math Expressions and Equations
Students will also review previous topics that they have not mastered, as many previous skills will be used in approaching this year's focal points.
Assignments
Students can expect a daily assignment. Usually some class time will be given for students to start their assignment. This allows them to ask any questions they might have about the assignment before they take it home.
Grades
All grades will be determined in the following way:
