Welcome to Second Grade!

Second Grade is a fun year, where much emphasis is put on gaining the skills necessary to be a life long learner, responsible citizen, effective communicator and faith filled individual.  We will focus on kindness and helping others, not just in our classroom, but in the school and larger community.

We will be learning about the seven Sacraments in Religion, and students will be supported through the St. Clare Parish to celebrate their First Reconciliation and First Communion.  Although we will cover many topics in math, we will spend a lot of time learning and memorizing addition and subtration facts, as well as working with place value and addition and subraction with three or more digits.  We will continue to improve our reading and writing skills, through class work and pen pals.  We will gain knowledge about our church and local community through research, reading and field trips.  We will work on scientific processes and carry out investigations that involve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  We will incorporate technology into our studies when possible, such as through typewriting skills and basic coding.

We will go on a few fieldtrips throughout the year, as they pertain to what we are learning, such as a play based on books we read, Pittock Mansion to learn about Portland's history, and Tryon Creek to learn about watersheds and how we can help the environment.

Another important focus of our year is service projects.  We will partner with Easter Seals on a variety of projects, work with the SW Watershed to clear up a local area, and send letters to the homebound parishioners of St. Clare Church.

Second grade will be a busy, engaging and informative year!

This is my second year at St. Clare School, and I am excited for another great year!  I have been a part of the St. Clare Parish for many years, and I enjoy being part of such an amazing and friendly school community.  Before teaching at St. Clare, I was an instructional assistant in a kindergarten classroom for one year, and prior to that, I worked in social services for ten years, assisting individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.  My goal is for every child to love learning, and I will work hard to assist each student, along with their family, to meet the learning needs of each individual.

Please contact me with any questions.
