Wade Math - Grade 7

Mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe.   - Galileo

Teacher: Mrs. Cathy Wade: cwade@stclarepdx.org

I believe that education is the process of uncovering, discovering - seeing with new eyes the wonders around us. The greatest joy for me in teaching is to be part of the "Aha!" moments in the classroom.

I believe that there is a mathematician within each of us and I celebrate disequilibrium as an opportunity for growing understanding.

My goal is to facilitate learning experiences that engage students in meaningful mathematics, developing understanding of key concepts and effective mathematical practices. I will support and challenge students to make connections, analyze discrepencies, think creatively, communicate clearly, and ask thoughful questions. Students will work independently and collaboratively to become competent, confident, and curious mathematicians.

Assignments:
Students can expect a daily assignment.  Usually some class time will be given for students to start their assignment.  This allows them to ask any questions they might have about the assignment before they take it home.

Grades:

50%  - assignments/classwork/notebook/homework

50% - quizzes/tests/assessments

Extra Help:

I encourage students to share ideas, questions, and alternate strategies, and to advocate for themselves when concepts are challenging.  The entire class benefits when members participate in the community of learners. If students need assistance beyond our scheduled class time, I am available before school, during selected lunch/recess, and after school by appointment.

Parent support:

  • Determine time and space for homework/study AND sleep, free from distractions (electronics)
  • Allow appropriate struggle.
  • Avoid "giving the answer."
  • Ask questions that encourage your child to think, " What do you understand about the problem/question?" "How do you know your solution/answer is reasonable?"
  • Do not let your child become too frustrated. Send an email (or have your child email) for clarification or to schedule time to review concerns or puzzling concepts.

I look forward to working with you!

Curriculum

The Archdiocese and the State of Oregon are among the first in the nation to adopt the new national math standards.  These standards teach fewer topics each year, but cover each topic to more depth. The students will see the topics again when they use them but not as teaching points.

7th Grade accelerated math will expore the following topics with the approximate timelines:
First Trimester - Proportions and Probability
Second Trimester- Shapes and Angles/Algebraic Equations
     Third Trimester - Geometry

These topics will be the focus of our study. Previous topics will be reviewed as needed to maintain skills in operations with rational numbers, equations, and problem solving.

Students may access the online textbook, worksheets, and support materials by following the link to Core Focus on Mathematics.   http://www.corefocusonmath.com/  (click in upper right)

Mathematical Practices

We emphasize mathematical practices as we approach each area of content. These practices include the following standards:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
