Welcome to Mrs. Wade's Sixth Grade Math
Teacher: Mrs. Cathy Wade: firstname.lastname@example.org
This is my sixth year teaching math at St. Clare School and my fifth year as a homeroom teacher and 6th grade science teacher.
In my 20 years in education, I have taught at St. Thomas More and Christ the King in the Portland Archdiocese and at St. John's in the Seattle Archdiocese.
I believe that education is the process of uncovering, discovering - seeing with new eyes the wonders around us. The greatest joy for me in teaching is to be part of the "Aha!" moments in the classroom. I believe that there is a mathematician within each of us.
My role is to organize, plan and prepare so that I can support and challenge students to make connections, to become competent, confident mathematicians and curious, thoughtful scientists.
I look forward to working with you!

The Archdiocese and the State of Oregon are among the first in the nation to adopt the new national math standards. These standards teach fewer topics each year, but cover each topic to more depth. The students will see the topics again when they use them but not as teaching points.
6th grade accelerated math will explore the following topics:
First Trimester - Decimals & Fractions/ Introductory Algebra
Second Trimester - Introcuctory Algebra/ Ratios, Rates & Statistics
Third Trimester - Ratios, Rates, & Statistics/Rational Expressions and Equations (including work with negative rational numbers for accelerated Math)
Students will also review previous topics that they have not mastered, as many previous skills will be used in approaching this year's areas of focus.
Students may access the online textbook, worksheets, and support materials by following the link to Core Focus on Mathematics. http://www.corefocusonmath.com/ (click in upper right)

We emphasize mathematical practices as we approach each area of content. These practices include the following standards:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Students can expect a daily assignment. Usually some class time will be given for students to start their assignment. This allows them to ask any questions they might have about the assignment before they take it home.
All grades will be determined in the following way:
Tests/ Quizzes/ Assessments 50%
I encourage students to share ideas, questions, and alternate strategies, and to advocate for themselves when concepts are challenging. The entire class benefits when members participate in the community of learners. If students need assistance beyond our scheduled class time, I am available before school and during lunch/recess by appointment.
Please feel free to email with questions or concerns.
